Vivohsyheni: Critique Evaluation

Critique on "Screen Addiction is Taking a Toll On Children."

This article is written by Jane E.Brody, author on science and nutrition topics, who has written a number of books and reported extensively for The New York Times as its "Personal Health" columnist. She has been called the "High Priestess of Health" by Time magazine. This article focuses more on children and teenagers, regardless of their race, ethnicity or social background.

The article is mainly about the effects of using electronic devices to children. The effects does not only comprise of physical effects but also mentally and psychologically. The author claims in her article that children will face more problems in the future if they use their handheld devices excessively and also that the children should be more exposed to the outside world and not confined in the space of their devices, thus developing more skills that would benefit them in the future.

The author has done a fantastic job in achieving her goals in this article. She first went on and mentioned about a program that shows the effects of excessive screentime and also cited information and statistical data on how much time does children spend on their electronic devices. Then, she went on mentioning about the adverse effects of using electronics for children under the age of two, where she mentioned that it is detrimental because it can affect the development of the children. The author has cited many reliable sources to further solidify her claims and adds to the relevancy of the article.

In my point of view, I very much agree with the author on this article. The author is just stating the truth and facts to support her claims. Even though parents are mostly responsible for their children being too attached, she does not put the entire blame on the parents by saying that parents just want their children to have something to do while they also perform their own tasks. She just mentioned that parents should be more observant on how much time their children spend on electronic devices. I also agree on the points she said about how children playing games can affect their social skills and make them have more or have higher chances of loneliness and depression. Eddie Wrenn, an author for the Daily Mail Online has also stated that too much time on using handheld devices can lead too depression, sleeping disorders and stress.

To conclude, the author has done a great job in achieving her purpose of the article by giving information and facts from various sources and really portraying the negative effects of screentime for children. Children can face many problems in the future if they use electronic devices excessively and it can also affect their psychological behavior.
